Rethinking Dan 9:27

Guest post by Truth:

This article examines how my reconsideration of the interpretation of a key word in Daniel 9:27 led me to change my understanding of possible end dates on the prophetic timeline. The updated prophecy spreadsheet (version 4.8.5) that accompanies this article can be downloaded HERE.

In a previous article posted here on Unsealed Prophecy, I  had assumed that the interpretation of the Hebrew word “uchtzi” (Strong’s 2677) in Daniel 9:27 could be “in the midst of.”

From Daniel 9:27 –

“He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ [IN THE MIDST OF] the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the wing he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”

This “in the midst of” interpretation allows for the sacrifice to be stopped anywhere within the ‘seven.’ That, in turn, has the effect of allowing the prophetic timeline to end on Hanukkah of 2019. I no longer consider this to be a possibility.

I have since then reexamined the Hebrew word “uchtzi” (Strong’s 2677) in Daniel 9:27 with the help of an online Hebrew Interlinear Bible http://www.scripture4all.org/OnlineInterlinear/OTpdf/dan9.pdf and an online Strong’s Concordance http://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H2677&t=KJV. It is now clear to me that Daniel 9:27 should be interpreted as –

“He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ [FOR ONE HALF OF] the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the wing he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”

TIMELINE DISCUSSION

Refer to the prophecy spreadsheet (version 4.8.5) that accompanies this article for spreadsheet cell references.

Here is how I understand the prophetic timeline now.

My first assumption is that the seventy weeks of Daniel 9:24 end on September 23, 2015. Refer to spreadsheet cell J11.

THE SEVENTY SEVENS

Assumption: The “Seventy ‘sevens'” of Daniel 9:24 are Jubilee weeks. (Ref. Lev 25:8-10, 20-22) There is no other possibility.

Assumption: The last ‘seven’ of Daniel 9:24 began on 6/7/1967 and will be complete on September 23, 2015. There is no other possibility.

A Jubilee week is seven periods of seven years each. Each year is 360 days long. Daniel 9:24 states that “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city…” The difference between 6/7/1967 and September 23, 2015 is exactly 7 x 7 years x 360 days/year = 17,640 days. The holy city of Jerusalem was captured (gained) on 6/7/1967. September 23, 2015 is a Yom Kippur, also known as The Day of Atonement.

Jerusalem will probably be partially surrendered (lost) on September 23, 2015.

Reasoning:

1) Daniel 9:24 tells us that “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city” (the ‘sevens’ clock only runs if the people of Yahuah are in possession of the holy city [Jerusalem]).

2) Daniel 9:25-26 tells us that sixty-nine (69) ‘sevens’ were complete by the time of the death of the Messiah, thus leaving only one ‘seven’ left to fulfill.

69 x 7 x 7 years x 360 days/year = 1217160 days. 1217160 days divided by 365.25 days/year = 3332.4 years. If we add another 70 years to account for the Babylonian captivity (when the people were not in the holy city), we get to approximately 3,400 B.C. This correlates closely with historical and archeological evidence of the age of Jerusalem. Finds of pottery vessels in tombs to the south of the present walls of the Old City indicate that the site was first settled around 3,500 B.C.

3) The last ‘seven’ of Daniel 9:24 began on 6/7/1967 when Moshe Dyan’s troops parachuted into Jerusalem and took control of it.

4) The last ‘seven’ of Daniel 9:24 cannot have already have been fulfilled historically. If it were, then the ‘seven’ that began on 6/7/1967 would be the seventy-first ‘seven.’ That would contradict scripture, so an historical fulfillment of the last ‘seven’ can be ruled out.

5) The last ‘seven’ of Daniel 9:24 cannot be shorter. If the last ‘seven’ of Daniel 9:24 were ‘seven years’ it would have been fulfilled by the sixth month of 1974; any time of Israeli control over all of Jerusalem beyond then would contradict scripture. Daniel 9:24 says “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed…,” not more, not fewer. Therefore, the ‘seven’ of Daniel 9:24 is NOT seven years.

In fact, the number of years in the last ‘seven’ of Daniel 9:24 must be at least the number of years that have passed since 6/7/1967. Any number less than that would mean that the last ‘seven’ were finished, and would therefore place us in a 71st or greater ‘seven,’ contradicting prophetic scripture.

6) The last ‘seven’ of Daniel 9:24 could be longer, but not by much. If the ‘sevens’ of Daniel 9:24 were longer than Jubilee weeks by just five (5) years, then working backward from the death of the Messiah, sixty-nine (69) of those ‘sevens’ would place the founding of Jerusalem at approximately 3,700 B.C. Similarly, if the ‘sevens’ were ten (10) years longer, the placement of the founding of Jerusalem would be approximately 4,000 B.C. Remember that the historical and archeological evidence concerning the age of Jerusalem places its first settlements at approximately 3,500 B.C.

A Jubilee week is the only Biblically documented time span of “seven” (Ref. Lev 25:8-10, 20-22) that fits within the aforementioned minimum and maximum constraints on the length of the last ‘seven’ of Daniel 9:24.

The last ‘seven’ of Daniel 9:24 will be complete on September 23, 2015. The Israelis will have sovereignty over Jerusalem until then; not a day fewer, not a day more.

POSSIBLE PROPHETIC TIMELINE ENDINGS

Refer to spreadsheet cell AG22.

Start with the assumption that the ‘seven’ of Daniel 9:27 begin near the end of the last of the “seventy ‘weeks'” (9/23/2015) because Daniel 9:24 tells us that those ‘weeks,’ among other things, are decreed to “anoint the Most Holy Place.” (Presumably to prepare it for animal sacrifice.) Assume that animal sacrifice is then reinstituted shortly thereafter.

Assume that the sacrifice will be stopped half way through a ‘seven’ year covenant.

“He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ For half of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering.” Dan. 9:27a.

Assume that the 1290 days of Daniel 12:11 start at the stopping of the sacrifice half way through the ‘seven’ of Daniel 9:27 and continue to the end of the wrath of Yahuah (Yom Kippur + 30 days).

“From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days.” Dan. 12:11.

Assume that the 1335 days of Daniel 12:12 start at the stopping of the sacrifice half way through the ‘seven’ of Daniel 9:27 and continue to a Hanukkah (Yom Kippur + 30 days + 45 days). Assume that such a Hanukkah marks the beginning of the Millennial Kingdom.

“Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days.” Dan. 12:12.

Note that in some years, 75 days pass from Yom Kippur to Hanukkah. In other years, 74 days pass from Yom Kippur to Hanukkah.

Assume that only those years where 75 days pass from Yom Kippur to Hanukkah will match Daniel 12:12 and that other years can be eliminated from consideration. Daniel 12:12 says “1335 days,” not “1334 days.”

Future Hanukkahs where 75 days pass from Yom Kippur to Hanukkah include 2015, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2024, 2026, 2027, 2030, and others in the future.

Apply the constraint that the 42 months of Revelation 11:2 cannot begin until the “seventy ‘sevens'” of Daniel 9:24 are complete (9/23/2015). In addition, apply the constraint that the 42 months of Revelation 11:2 must be completed before the Millennial Kingdom begins. These two constraints eliminate Hanukkahs 2015 and 2018 from consideration. Neither one of them would allow enough time for the fulfillment of the 42 months of Revelation 11:2.

September 23, 2015 to Hanukkah 2015 is less than 42 months.

September 23, 2015 to Hanukkah 2018 is less than 42 months.

Now remember that there also has to be enough time before a final Hanukkah for a ‘seven’ year covenant to take place. Hanukkah 2019 less seven (7) years yields an historical date. There is not enough time to fit a ‘seven’ year covenant between now and Hanukkah 2019. It, too, can be eliminated from consideration.

And so that leaves us with Hanukkah 2022 as the next available Hanukkah that could possibly be the last day of the 1,335 days of Daniel 12:12.

CONCLUSION

Even though I have had this article in mind for several months, I purposely waited to publish it until now. I wanted to make sure that my thinking on the subject was (relatively) settled. As with my previous articles, please remember that I am not a prophet. I could be wrong. I have made assumptions. In my opinion, they are good assumptions. However, you will have to determine if you agree or disagree with them and my calculations.

Blessings to those of you who are seeking the truth. I hope that this article helps you in your studies.

  3. Nkosazana, the length of a generation does not enter into my calculations. The passage that says “when you see these things…” (Matthew) is spoken of the persons who are alive when the “tribulation” events of the prophecies begin their fulfillment (half way through the ‘seven’ of Daniel 9:27). Those events are still future to us. I have found no scripture that states that “Israel returns to the land and a generation passes until the end comes.” Instead, my take is that the generation that is alive and sees the “tribulation” events will not pass away before the fulfillment of the prophecies is complete. So, in my opinion, a generation cannot be used to determine when the prophecies will be fulfilled.

  5. I appreciate how you are trying to examine the text from every possible angle, which is to be commended, but I don’t think I can agree with you on this one Truth. The 3400 years goes back to the beginning of Jerusalem in your model, but I don’t see that in the text.

Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until • Messiah the Prince will be seven weeks and 62 weeks. It will be rebuilt with a plaza and a moat, but in difficult times. Daniel 9:25 hcsb

Every translation I’ve ever read seems to suggest that the 62 weeks is from the time of the decree to rebuild Jerusalem after the captivity until the arrival of Messiah – depending on which decree you mean either Cyrus (~539BC) or Artaxerxes (~445BC) – I see that as clearly fulfilled prophecy about the first coming of the Messiah and his triumphal entry 483 years later. I am having a hard time getting to the 3400 year timeline since the exodus was only about 1500 BC and the reign of David around 1000 BC. I would struggle to point to a pre-Abraham settling of Jerusalem as the start of the prophetic clock for this since the prophecy is clearly about Israel and that would be pointing to some other people, not the people with whom God made his covenant as fulfilling the first part of the prophecy. If there is any textual evidence the 70th week is different somehow from the others, that would make this more interesting but I haven’t ever seen any solid evidence of that.

  6. Point well taken Justasheep. I have no references that would suggest that the time line would not begin with the conclusion of the Babylonianian captivity by one or the other decrees. What say you Truth? Why would you begin earlier? Nkosazana

  7. Nkosazana and Justasheep,

Your comments have been helpful. In considering them, it has become obvious to me that the conclusion of my article remains the same whether we hold a Daniel 9:24 ‘seven’ to be a seven year ‘seven’ or a Jubilee (49 year) ‘seven.’ It is now March 30, 2014. There is not enough time left for the ‘seven’ (assuming a seven year ‘seven’) of Daniel 9:27 to fit between now and Hanukkah 2019. Hanukkah 2022 is still the next available Hanukkah that could possibly be the last day of the 1,335 days of Daniel 12:12. I would have come to the same conclusion even if I had not considered the length of a Daniel 9:24 ‘seven.’

  11. Hello all. Hope you are all doing well. Hmm was wondering anyone’s thoughts on this? Today EU foreign policy chief is holding a meeting. This is one item on the agenda:
    http://www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/2014/04/04/EU-foreign-ministers-meet-to-discuss-Ukraine-and-Russia/2221396620430/
“The foreign ministers, Ashton said, will have the opportunity at the meeting to assess whether the neighborhood policy is a framework that should be continued or whether a new approach is needed.”
It seems a lot of the EU politicians are realizing the ENP isn’t working. Pastor brian found interesting thinktank article recommending a reset to the ENP. Also, I found this article
    http://www.dw.de/germany-france-poland-call-for-new-eu-approach-to-eastern-neighbors/a-17534667
Perhaps its time for a new person to reset this ENP?

“Daniel 9:24-25 speaks of this coming Messiah in terms of his redemptive work. The New Testament if full of the testimony of the apostles as they explain Yeshua’s death and resurrection in terms of mankind’s reconciliation to their Creator. Is this prophecy of Daniel 9 pointing us to Yeshua and his part in mankind’s reconciliation to YHWH?”

“If Yeshua was born in 4 BC (as defined by a Messiah factor of 13) then he would have in fact turned 30 years old in the fall of 27 AD. I believe if one digs deep enough we will find that this date marks the either Yeshua’s baptism or the point when He proclaimed the “acceptable year of YHWH as described in Luke 4.”

    http://www.the13thenumeration.com/Blog13/2013/08/26/the-messiah-factors-covenant-week/

Part IIII of the Messiah Factors

“Daniel 9:26-27 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

The text states that “he” will confirm a covenant with the “many” for one week. So we have a choice to make. Who is the “he” of Daniel 9:27? Is the “he” a reference to the Messiah in verse 26a or is “he” a reference to the “prince” of the people mentioned in 26b?

I’ll be blunt here. I have a hard time seeing any reasonable contextual argument which would support the idea of taking the focus of this prophecy off the Messiah and placing it on the “prince” who the text only mentions in passing. For those who might have missed it, Daniel started out his prayers and supplications to YHWH by reminding Him of the “covenant”. (Dan. 9:4) During the final phase of this prophecy what Hermeneutical argument is there then for shifting the focus from its Messianic theme?”

    Love and blessings.

  28. Part three.

  29. Interesting article – but since it’s now Sept. 28, 2015, I like to think this was a little lesson for you when it comes to date-setting.

A view with which, for now at least, I’m very comfortable, is that Daniel 7-12 are in fact one giant prophecy, all elaborating on one another. Chapter 7 provides the Big Picture, all the way from Daniel’s own generation to the Second Coming. But what most interpreters miss (in my opinion) is the intriguing relationship between chs. 8 and 9. Dispensationalists in particular overlook it completely.

Virtually all schools of interpretation agree that Daniel 8 describes the reign of Antiochus Epiphanes IV (175-164 BC), highlighting his arrogance and his severe persecution of God’s people. Notice two factors in that prophecy: (1) “Understand, O son of man, that the vision is for the time of the end.” (8:17; cf. “the time of the end” in 11:27, 35, 40; 12:4, 9) And (2) even after an attempted explanation by Gabriel, at the end of ch. 8 Daniel still asserts, “I was appalled by the vision and did not understand it.” (8:27)

So in other words, the ch. 8 vision didn’t resolve things for Daniel; he needed more information about it. This leads us (after Daniel’s confessional prayer) to the Seventy Weeks.

After Daniel has prayed, Gabriel comes to him again and says, “[C]onsider the word and understand the vision.” (9:23) Question: What vision? Daniel hasn’t been given a vision in ch. 9, so logically Gabriel must be referring back to the vision of ch. 8 – which, recall, Daniel explicitly told us he still didn’t understand, and which we were also told is connected to “the time of the end”!!

Therefore the Seventy Weeks prophecy is _partly an explanation of the ch. 8 prophecy_!!! And this leads me to my current position: the Seventy Weeks are a symbolic period of time, and the prophecy actually has _two_ fulfillments. The first fulfillment ended with the downfall of Antiochus in 165/4 BC. The second fulfillment carries us to the time of the Second Coming. In the preliminary, lesser fulfillment, the “anointed one” who gets “cut off” is the high priest Onias III, who was assassinated in 171 BC (note that from 171 to 164, when the temple was rededicated, is approx. 7 years), and Antiochus himself represents the Antichrist. Then, in the second, more important fulfillment of the prophecy, we have the Antichrist himself pitted against the /ultimate/ Anointed One, Jesus, who himself is, in his first coming, “cut off.” Onias III, then, prefigured Jesus.

There’s an interlude in Daniel 10 that gets into supernatural warfare in the angelic realm, but then we’re back to more prophesying – and /again/ we have a twofold prophecy, covering the very same ground as the twofold prophecy in chs. 8-9. Daniel 11:21-35a covers the reign of Antiochus – and then there’s a time jump signified by the phrase in v. 35b: “until the time of the end.” Thereafter the prophecy is of persons and events that were /not/ seen in the time of Antiochus, but instead are connected to the Second Coming (from 11:36 through ch. 12).
