The one who opens and shuts

I’ve been thinking about a part of Revelation that many of us skip quickly through when we are looking for the good “eschatological” bits to assemble our pretty charts and tables and spreadsheets about the end times. Not that any of those things are bad in and of themselves, as good Bereans we should be searching the scriptures and comparing one passage to another to see how they all fit together. Recently though I keep coming back to Revelation 2 and 3, the letters to the seven churches.

Today I’m thinking very much about Revelation 3:8

I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. (Revelation 3:8, ESV)

He is the one who opens the door – and he is the only one who can shut it. How is a door that’s to be kept closed stay closed – it has a lock.  As I’ve been watching the events unfold in the world these past few months, without really posting much, I finally had this moment where I was able to put to words what I’d been thinking about what I’m seeing. It is like the tumblers inside a lock are slowly being maneuvered into position so that the lock will pop open at exactly the right moment. Those tumblers being in position, I believe, is the fulfillment of every single prophecy that is yet to be fulfilled before the second coming of Christ.

Specifically, looking at what is going on this week in Russia and Ukraine – we see the unmistakable emergence of a new (yet also old, but new for this century) and powerful force in Russia under Putin. Where there was one great power in the world after the fall of the Soviet Union – now we see that even the formerly mighty United States dare not oppose this new aggressive stance of the Russian leader. As the Bible identifies in Ezekiel 38-39, a power from the North with Persia, Turkey, Libya and Sudan will one day attack Israel and be utterly destroyed by God. We see the Obama administration in the Unites States continue to posture and threaten to not come to Israel’s aid if it doesn’t keep with the current leaders framework for “peace” with “palestinian” proxies of the region’s Arab leaders. We know that at the critical moment, that Israel will have to depend on God alone (Zechariah 12:2-8) and He will defend them personally. We see the rising power of a huge country in the East that many fear will make war with it’s neighbors over a number of territorial disputes, one that is rapidly building up the capability to field a huge army and we know has the labor and industrial manufacturing capacity to field a military of frightening scale (say 200 Million men) in a very short time.

Right now both the EU and the US look exceptionally weak, economically, militarily, and morally. As many of us agree, it is that weakness that will invite the crisis that invites a wicked leader of terrifying power, the rise of the little horn that will uproot 3 of the ten.

We’ve already seen so many small moves, I think like the methodical click, click, click of the tumblers in a lock moving into position.

click click click

Israel is reborn

Rome reappears shortly thereafter

Israel is in under constant threat from its neighbors (a time of trouble)

The balance of power in the world crumbles and new players emerge

Rome continues to rise again as an economic power (but a weakened one) Daniel 2 again

The power of the North aligns with Persia, Libya and Sudan – and soon I expect more and more with Turkey as unrest there continues to grow

Egypt falls into a state of chaos and weakness and does not emerge from it (as Isaiah predicted)

A huge power rises in the East that has an excess of men who will never have a chance to marry due to its evil childbearing policies, and cultural preference for sons- one with a huge industrial base that could be shifted to military production in the blink of an eye (like the US did in WWII)

click click click

Do you see any more tumblers on the lock moving into place? I’m sure I’ve forgotten a ton. This would be a great place to point out those verifiable events (not secret conspiracy theories or wild youtube rants) where we can plainly see a resemblance to prophetic events we know or suspect are yet in the future.

Someday soon the clasp on the lock is going to pop open (sooner perhaps for some of us) and the door will be open that no one can shut for those of us that love the Lord. Let’s be ready, and let’s be about our Master’s business while we await his return for us.

  1. I’m not nitpicking at all, but trying to understand if what you’re pointing to in the scripture pertains to your other point. But the scripture doesn’t say anything about the door being shut or locked. It’s just that there is an open door. Maybe there are things for the particular church to accomplish, or walk through via the door and no one can shut it or keep those works from being accomplished. But, hey I’ve been known to de-rail a conversation before because i over analyze things! Sorry, but i do understand and like the symbolism of the tumblers slowly clicking! I’m glad you did finally post something to chew on. I visit the site every day along w/ Pastor Brian to see how current events are guiding us closer and closer to that open door! Thanks for all you and Vic do!

  2. That’s a great comment Scott – not a nitpick at all. That particular verse I’ve been thinking of mentions nothing about things being shut – but it alludes to many instances in scripture where we see the Lord being in the role of one who shuts, and no one else can open.

    Isaiah 22.22
And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David. He shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.

    Matthew 25:10
And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut.

and I think what really caused me to be thinking about this the last couple days is a passage that my pastor preached from this past weekend which included:

    Luke 13: 24-30
“Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’ Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ But he will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’ In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out. And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God. And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

So I’m really glad you asked because it made me think about what God was using to move my heart where he was – and as always his word is enough.

  3. i like the analogy sheep and i can feel it in my bones, so to speak. Thinking back to when all this started for me in 1983….that was the river, THIS IS THE SEA! Love with all His might. Eternity awaits*, and while some may try and pick the lock, His own faithfully watch and wait, in AWE*,……thank you sheep, again i’m blessed, God is Good*

  4. I think this is a great post as far as looking at all the prophetic events happening and I will definitely keep this and look at it some more. I just can’t see the application of Rev. 3:8. Maybe it’s there but I just don’t see it. But I do like the lock illustration.

  5. oh, I like those other verses and how they bolster your thoughts. Can’t wait to hear your’s and Vic’s thoughts on the happenings in the East and how they might be more of the clicking sound we are hearing! Great work!

  6. Stephen – welcome to our conversation. I’ll admit that the way I applied the verse in this instance is not the typical application of that passage. My thinking was to apply one of the attributes of Christ – one who opens, and one who shuts the door to heaven as represented in that verse and the others I mentioned in a way that was involved in what is happening now and what we await, with the Lord’s eventual return for us either at our physical death or when he gathers the church to himself.

My purpose was that it is the Lord that opens the door to us, he is the one that shows us the narrow way – and it is still him who is in control of all these things that will happen before he returns. It’s very easy to grow anxious as we see troubling things happening around the world and I am hoping that no one who reads this blog is lead into anxiety and fear. Rather I would hope that that they would view the signs of the times we live in and things we see, some that we know are prophecy fulfilled, and some we think may be prophecy fulfilled or things falling into place for the imminent fulfillment of prophecy as reasons instead to trust in the Lord. All is happening exactly according to his plan and the can replace the tendency of our flesh to worry and be afraid with a hope that his is day is drawing very near and that he will rescue us from all these things (Matthew 24:33)

  7. http://www.bibleprophecyblog.com/2013/08/temple-institute-preparing-for.html# — found this on bro brian’s site. perhaps some compromises could be in the works regarding the peace talks that will let this proceed? (with potential to touch off a firestorm and be shutdown?) the world’s courts have already been weighing in on this issue setting the “ground rules” against kosher sacrifice among many other rules they are setting. well……..i just know this bears watching closely. i think the plan may include dividing temple mount (as an international property) as well as the land of israel (to bring “justice”) at the bidding of an international cry (and international armies ya think?) for “peace and safety” by making the big 3 religions “play nice” (this pope especially is trying to “play nice”) up on temple mount to stop all the religious wars they (the globalists who will soon have a leader as their spokesman and enforcer) think keeps the world unsafe. isn’t it marvelous (and comforts me with the Blessed Hope) that the Bible is absolutely showing us in each detail how all this progressively goes down?—–but we have to wait *(and trust Him)* for each details unfolding–as the Timing is proving very much too–that God is firmly in control of world events to let man’s sin play out in an ultimate and His Answer to that is His Ultimate….the Wrath of God stored up for just such a time of the world’s history. The Lord Jesus Christ will Return!!! and He will rule with a rod of iron. for now the jews are wanting their go at restoring the covenant….but God will be showing them instead….that HE had already made a New and Better Covenant–Jesus their Messiah–JESUS the LORD of Lords and their faces will be filled with shame and mourning…and repenting they will finally see (Whom they have pierced)……..then Rejoice for finally knowing Him! puts us on the edge of our seats in anticipation amen? watching along with you 🙂 and hope that all are well. love to all. Jesus The Lord loves you! …. \ 0 / ….

  8. Revelation 3 (King James Version)

    Revelation 3
    King James Version (KJV)
3 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.

2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.
3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.

5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

6 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Thanks to all I do not post much, busy with a 2 year old and no desktop at present have to use laptop that is my husband’s and I do not really like laptops, lol. Just to let all know I am still watching and praying and keeping up with the posts and comments.

Interesting to me how many times those who teach the pre tribulation rapture which I used to believe use that thief in the night comment but here it states very differently about the timing or our being caught up to meet our Lord Jesus.

    1 Thessalonians 5
    King James Version (KJV)
5 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.ment and here you see it used very differently just as you do in

  9. it’s nice to see your name come up roma. i cannot go along with the pre-trib rapture now either. i just know we are not appointed unto wrath as you are quoting so not sure where that rapture time frame enters but i believe that much is to kickoff in this year (even this spring???) if they indeed surround jerusalem with armies as it very looks like that could be on the horizon. something major is going to bring that about and i think that major thing is in the works right now. but whenever it is……i know i’ll keep watching with you fine folks because letting the Scripture unfold it’s story to tell us what to look for and not men’s teaching is what i believe too. oh yes…….click, click, click…….(and tick, tick, tick…growing louder!!!)
