The Criminalization of Christianity

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 1 Peter 4:12

Above is a guy who is quite well known in the US – Phil Robertson from the Television show “Duck Dynasty”.  He and and his family have since the inception of their show been up front about their Christian faith, and never shy about sharing the Gospel. Now we see this week Phil has run afoul of the worldly powers that be who have decided it is not permissible to say a critical word about homosexuality.

Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson suspended by A&E for comments on homosexuality

The interesting thing about this story – from comments I’ve seen from Phil in the past, I don’t think he really cares that he was taken off the show, but this illustrates a growing trend in the US and across the world that we need to be aware of and watching.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but this week I kept seeing a theme repeating itself over and over.  Christians are no long being allowed to follow the commands of scripture without risking prosecution or great civil liablities.

COLORADO JUDGE: Bakery Owner Discriminated Against Gay Couple By Refusing To Bake Wedding Cake
In Colorado – a bakery is being told they MUST make a cake for a homosexual wedding that goes against their Christian beliefs.

Family Says They Did Tip Gay Server, Didn’t Leave Note

The above story was a hoax perpetrated by a misguided homosexual activist seeking attention. The most troublesome part was the family accused responded by gushing over how supportive they were of gays in order to dispute the story. What if this had happened to a bible-believing Christian couple? Would the media have believed them or would they now be facing discrimination charges or a lawsuit of some kind – all due to an evil self-serving hoax.

Outside of these stories, American businesses are being forced to adopt secularized values and reject the Christian beliefs of their owners or shareholders:

U.S. asks Supreme Court to review Hobby Lobby’s birth control mandate challenge

The US Supreme Court has taken up this case, and I believe we expect to hear a ruling on it and several related cases sometime next Spring. I am not hopeful that they will support the rights of people in business to have and express Christian beliefs in their place of business. This will continue to put a chilling effect on Christian speech and further marginalize those who claim the name of Jesus as savior both culturally and economically.

In the UK the story is much the same with this result earlier this year:

Christian B&B owners Hazelmary and Peter Bull ‘forced to sell up’

So did we know this was coming – Yes.

“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.” John 15:18

“Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, ” 2 Timothy 3:12

I think it is a surprise though to many in the west especially in lukewarm churches that there will be a cost to truly following Jesus. I expect the trend continue among the lukewarm, as they are spat out of the Lord’s mouth that they will turn even farther from biblical faith and reject the true Christ of the Gospel.

But as adopted Sons and Daughters of the most high – even though trouble is coming we need not fear.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
You will not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes
and see the recompense of the wicked.
Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place—
the Most High, who is my refuge—
no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
no plague come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the adder;
the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he knows my name.
When he calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”
(Psalm 91 ESV)

  1. amen justasheep. the servant is not greater than his Lord–how Jesus was hated is how we know that those who love Him will be treated too. this world is not our home! when the Gospel is lifted up–“and I, when I am lifted up, will draw all men unto Me” is what Jesus said. He was lifted up and crucified but i am so thankful i was drawn by Him to believe and be saved. God will greatly this opportunity for Jesus to be lifted up in what phil robertson expressed to call out sin–is exactly the opportunity for men to hear and know the Truth-to believe in the One True Redeemer and be saved. we also know many many will not believe–the battle rages for the souls of men—but God can-and God will-save some! we here now, who love Jesus, were born for such a time as this–lives saved and then “losing” them (denying ourselves worldly pursuits, pleasures and the world’s acceptance and so-called “rewards”) because laid down for the sake of the Master–picking up our cross to follow Him. mark 8:34. i pray for mr robertson and his family to just stand on The Rock-to hold fast-and keep their testimony in all the turmoil this now brings. the dark is indeed getting darker–blacker—but this only makes the Light shine all the more against it amen? \ 0 /

  2. I don’t own a TV. Actually I refuse to have that thing in my home{ t’s been difficult to explain that to other ” Christians'” } but none the less I like not having one 🙂

    But how does one escape this media saturated mentality daily? I mean I can’t even go to the gym for crying out loud without having 6 big flat screen TV’s blaring out 6 different channels. ! Funny thing is I deliberately chose a health club where the ” yuppies ” don’t frequent! Go figure! I mean I love the elderly, in my work, in my play , in my private life, but ……….

    Okay I’m done venting!

    When I first saw this program , I laughed and was reminded of a comment Vic made many moons ago { about real men , real hunting and real men’s contact sports } and admit I was pretty cynical . I mean I would love to see these guys on a hunting{ survival } trip in SA and see how they would fare to the boys down in Nelspruit 🙂 but I was pretty much blessed to read how this man { at the risk of loosing everything HOLLOWood has to offer} for honouring God with his stand.

    Real men LOVE Jesus Christ even if that means the LOSS of all things.{ that alone should convict the heart of many I pray!}

    This is about spiritual strength, not the physical. Besides this is a war fought on the knees, not in the Serengeti or some duck pond out in some swamp area 🙂

    I loved these verses tonight.

    Matthew 10:32-33″Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before my Father who is in heaven.”

    Mark 8:38, “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when he comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

  4. yep. why i noted mark 8:34 because it leads right up to the very thought expressed in mark 8:38 that you quote hisown. “let him deny himself”——following Jesus will cost us in this life–oh yes. come out from among them-be ye separate from the world was apostle paul’s warning to further express the thought of what Jesus Himself said we must do-if we would truly be His. sobering words aren’t they?

  5. Speaking of “criminalization” and such I’ve felt the sting of that more than once for daring to stand on convictions that quite frankly ostracize as much as my JW family does.

    Not to derail the thread, but to make a point of standing up on a subject that’s not only rejected, justified and vehemently guarded by most I know, but it’s almost taboo to discuss …… it’s the pagan meaning of ChristMASS!

    We claim to be mature believer’s , filled with the Holy Spirit, yet why is it that this invokes such angry responses in those I try to broach the subject with! I get the typical ” oh you’re a ex- JW” or ” you are bitter because you have never received a Christmas gift growing up” or…..

    Well that’s not it at all. You see I used to celebrate this pagan holiday until 7 yrs ago when the Lord used my son to ask me a very difficult question.

    Out of the mouth of babes right 🙂

    I’ve never looked back!

  6. john11:25,26 Jesus said unto her, I AM the resurrection and the Life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he Live and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die. believest thou this? ……with all my heart i believe this. my momma passed away last night. she is Home. she went gently safely o’er—–what Beautiful Mercy!!! i have no words for the sweetness of His Grace that surrounded us all in that hospital room. we were there with her praising and thanking God, quoting the beautiful Life giving Words of the Lord as she went to be with the Lord she loved. your prayers are a blessing in our time of need. this hurts…but we do not sorrow as the world. thank you all for the Love of Jesus that comes through you. God knows who you are even though i have no face to recognize. it is Jesus that i recognize in you all. God bless each one in the Wonderful Beautiful Power of the Resurrected Christ——–death did not win.

  7. Oh my goodness Andre what a beautiful gift and the ” knowing” that she’s with Lord .Oh death where is thy sting?

    I don’t even know her and tears of relief run down my checks, maybe it’s because it’s the very same verse the Lord gave me on the day of my mom’s funeral. What a blessing!

    Please know that my prayers are with you and your family and better it is to go to the house of mourning.

    Ecc 7:2
    It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

    May the Lord overwhelm you with His love, mercy and grace in this time .

  13. Tony that was precious, Thank-you for sharing your heart. I love that the Lord is the ONLY One that sees the heart of man right!

    I despise people{ so called believers } who judge , reject and distance themselves from people like ” Mark” your friend roaming on the streets in VA. I have a very soft spot for them and will pray for him to come to know Christ.

    Let me tell you something I’m passionately opposed to those that sit in ” high places” and look down on those that Christ died for as well as whom are MADE in the image of God.
    I’m currently dealing with a very frustrating situation that deals with this in a low income widow that’s been left to the same demise of the ” poor” man {that had the dogs licked his sores.}
    The Lord is using her to show others what it really means to love the unlovely, touch the untouchables and to honour Him in pure and undefiled religion as spoke of in James chapter 1.

    You see it’s so easy to{ try and silence one’s conscience } and to write out a $ ?????? queue to the pastor and get all the ” oh and aahh’s” for being such a good ” tither”{ which by the way is NOT a new testament teaching} or give so that other’s ” praise ” you, but sadly they have their reward already.

    A judgment for the rich in these end times!

    James 5

    5 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.

    2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.

    3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

    4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.

    5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.

    6 Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.

    7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

    8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.

    9 Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.

    10 Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.

    11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

    12 But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.

    13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.

    14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

    15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

    16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

    17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.

    18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

    19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;

    20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

  18. Don’t know about you guys but I don’t like the ” sound” of this word ” MOBILIZE”!

    Something about this is just not right and pray that we will heed the Word of God that the end-times are characterized by apostasy not some massive ” revival ” and a ” mobilization ” of believers . That sounds way too ” NAR” to me. If I’m in error, may the Lord show me that 🙂 They seems to be popping up all over the place!

    Will A&E’s suspension of Phil Robertson mobilize evangelical Christians?
