The wonder of Jesus

Strange topic for a post I guess, but let me try to explain. First of all, I am not a scientist, physicist or astronomer, so my knowledge of the universe is limited to what I believe God wants me to know. I have just laid my hands on a television series called “How the universe works’. Well, I am a sucker for anything that has got “SPACE” written on it.

I love to listen and see the scientists explain the enormousness of the universe. My mind can not comprehend that there are hundreds of thousands of stars (Suns) in our galaxy, the Milky Way. To think that the Milky Way is 100 000 light years in diameter does not compute well with my grey matter.  Friends, light travels at a speed of 186,000 miles a second or 700 million miles an hour. For scale, the distance from the Earth to the Moon is about 239,000 miles.  That means at the speed of light you can reach the moon in 1.2 seconds. But at that speed you will cross our galaxy, the Milky Way in 100 000 years! Can you grasp those distances? But now with the help of Hubble and other modern telescopes they have counted that there are more than 6 BILLION galaxies in the universe. Do you grasp that??!! There is no way that a finite mind can grasp these sizes accurately. There is also no way that a finite mind can grasp an infinite Creator.

Isa 48:13 Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together.

My friends, do you realize that God is bigger than this universe. Do you realize that He spanned these billions of galaxies with His right hand? And do you realize that this God died for us on a cross?

Now let me get to the point of this post. About 20 years ago the scientists discovered something they called Dark Matter. Now the reason for them calling it Dark Matter is because it can not be seen. It is all around us and the Dark Matter/Dark Energy fills about 90% of the universe. Some scientists even say that this Dark Matter is more real than the visible universe.

Scientists can also be stupid. Unfortunately they believe in the big bang theory. So they use this foolish theory to try to explain why galaxies are drifting apart. They just could not explain why a galaxy like a whirlpool galaxy  does not drift apart into chaos. According to all their computer models gravity was not enough to keep a galaxy together. That was until they have used the Dark Matter in those computer models. When used, everything was stable and the galaxy does not break apart. The conclusion by science: An unknown force called Dark Matter than can not be explained is the glue of the universe and keeping everything together.

Friends, I am no scientist, but I know the Bible. There is nothing dark about this matter holding everything together. 2000 years ago Paul revealed the mystery and  today science wants to sound clever. Listen to Paul explaining it:

Colossians 1:17

(AOV) En Hy is voor alle dinge, en in Hom hou alle dinge stand.

(ASV) and He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

(ISV) He himself existed before anything else did, and He holds all things together.

(KJV) And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist.

(LITV) And He is before all things, and all things have subsisted in Him.

Think about it.

  1. Hey Vic , I didn’t know you were a ” spacey kinda guy” …lol makes sense now 🙂

    Only kidding!

I loved to read the Afrikaans verse and just loved that, Coll misses home 🙂

  2. Sheep is a space nut too- I thought I should grow up to be an astronaut or an astronomer when I was boy. Instead I was just a sci-fi fan, and came to my Lord at the time of his choosing.

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

  3. I do love this site and the variety of posts as I find them more and more interesting everyday. I recently watched a science special which had Stephen Hawkney claim that God could not have created the universe because he would not have had enough time to do so. I just shook my head thinking how could such a smart man have such a closed mind.

  4. Thank you William – I can guess you might have been thinking of Dr. Hawking:

The heart is deceitful above all things,
    and desperately sick;
    who can understand it?
“I the LORD search the heart
    and test the mind,
to give every man according to his ways,
according to the fruit of his deeds.”
    (Jeremiah 17:9-10 ESV)

He can not see it because he is as dead as you and I were before the Lord brought us to life in him. His guilt will be upon him as the Universe has screamed out – “There is a God! There is a God!” It shows me and encourages me that a stunning intellect is not what is required to know God -if anything it can be a path to pride and self-worship. I see so much of the beauty of what God has done as well in the simple profession of faith of a young man with many mental handicaps – and that God would choose to reveal himself to him. I can only praise my matchless savior, who needs nothing I can bring and lacks nothing that I need.

  5. Louie Giglio, a Pastor in Atlanta Georgia, while on tour with Chris Tomlin, did a mid-sermon series. One of them is called “How Great is Our GOD,” and in it, he talks about Jesus, the star-breather. It is really worth checking out. No, this is not an ad plug, just correlating the topic with a sermon I saw and, yes, Louie ties it all together with Jesus being the glue that holds everything together.

  6. i love this post…..i love living amazed at how God did all this (the universe He made) and why He would even love me. the “glue” that holds everything together is so mind-blowing to think on—but what gets me the most?…..what held Jesus to the Cross. it wasn’t the nails—it was His Love. His Love held Him there……….breath-taking……………………(and holds me together right now and in the days to come). one day everyone will “get it”—because every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. in this short clip is something so beyond words—a hubble telescope picture you will never ever forget—http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Cm1Wov7l5k

  7. Justaheep, you are correct as I was incorrect. It was Dr. Hawking as I always seem to mispronounce his name. Probably because my late father’s mother’s maiden name was Hawkney. Thanks for helping me out there and may God continue to bless you since taking the monumental task of keeping this site going and not skipping a beat.

  8. Sorry WC – I didn’t mean to be correcting you at all, I just thought you were thinking of the scripture I posted. 🙂
