Comment by Adamantine:
I do not know what to make of a lunar eclipse and am as yet unlearned in the possibilities of the meaning of common astronomical events BIBLICALLY in the affairs of men. I tend towards viewing it as superstition to assign any meaning to them as does most of the “educated” western civilization. However I also understand that the same western civilization views ANY interaction of God with mankind as superstition and western Christianity seems to accept only blessing as from God. Hence there seems to be a stepwise gradation of belief. The book of Revelation has apparent references to significant events to be seen in the skies at the time of the end.
I have noted that some on other sites have wondered if the lunar eclipse of last week has any significance as it relates to current events. One poster connected it loosely to the mistake the US made in its laws relating to homosexuals serving openly in the military. I tend to say no but would like to hear from anyone who would have something to say on this type of issue. I doubt we will arrive at an answer but this is the type of forum to discuss the things that are less easily discussed in other Christian settings where one must be careful not to lead “weaker brothers” astray. All discussion as it relates to the difficult topic of Biblical prophecy must be understood to have controversy and be tentative. If I have never said so before I say it now. We see through a glass darkly and tread carefully. Events have yet to declare things with certainty. Hence we watch.
Interestingly I was studying with my children the Peloponesian Wars last week. In the seige of Syracuse by the Athenians they unexpectedly viewed a lunar eclipse which was interpreted by their soothsayers to require a delay in plans. They waited but that too led to disaster. So even if astronomy* were to mean anything in the affairs of men the interpretation is questionable as compared to a destructive earthquake for which the meaning if there is one would be clearer but still open to some interpretation.
Example: Was Sodom destroyed for its pride or homosexuality or both?
*I exclude classical astrology as understood by the ancients and instead link any discussion of Biblical meaning only to the astronomy of the events.
