Lunar Eclipse, ??Can it have meaning??

Comment by Adamantine:

I do not know what to make of a lunar eclipse and am as yet unlearned in the possibilities of the meaning of common astronomical events BIBLICALLY in the affairs of men. I tend towards viewing it as superstition to assign any meaning to them as does most of the “educated” western civilization. However I also understand that the same western civilization views ANY interaction of God with mankind as superstition and western Christianity seems to accept only blessing as from God. Hence there seems to be a stepwise gradation of belief. The book of Revelation has apparent references to significant events to be seen in the skies at the time of the end.

I have noted that some on other sites have wondered if the lunar eclipse of last week has any significance as it relates to current events. One poster connected it loosely to the mistake the US made in its laws relating to homosexuals serving openly in the military. I tend to say no but would like to hear from anyone who would have something to say on this type of issue. I doubt we will arrive at an answer but this is the type of forum to discuss the things that are less easily discussed in other Christian settings where one must be careful not to lead “weaker brothers” astray. All discussion as it relates to the difficult topic of Biblical prophecy must be understood to have controversy and be tentative. If I have never said so before I say it now. We see through a glass darkly and tread carefully. Events have yet to declare things with certainty. Hence we watch.

Interestingly I was studying with my children the Peloponesian Wars last week. In the seige of Syracuse by the Athenians they unexpectedly viewed a lunar eclipse which was interpreted by their soothsayers to require a delay in plans. They waited but that too led to disaster. So even if astronomy* were to mean anything in the affairs of men the interpretation is questionable as compared to a destructive earthquake for which the meaning if there is one would be clearer but still open to some  interpretation.

Example: Was Sodom destroyed for its pride or homosexuality or both?

*I exclude classical astrology as understood by the ancients and instead  link any discussion of Biblical meaning only to the astronomy of the events.

  1. “Example: Was Sodom destroyed for its pride or homosexuality or both?”
“Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:8 Hardly a humble heart will rush into sin before examining the consequences. Pride rushes in to entertain sin. Christian or non-Christian.

I don’t very little about the moon and many things for that matter, with the exception of a single astronomy class taken in college, but I could not help noticing the timing of things while watching the news last night.

Hundreds of homes here in California have women crying from their cars as their own homes return unto them mud dirt, filth by way of the torrential rains. “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:

It comes as no surprise to see that once Mr. O signed the “No tell” military coo this week that the damage again, began to sweep through here in California — it happens e-v-e-r-y time whether by fire, rain or earthquake.

What does continually astonish me though is how the Lord’s patience even now, works towards us and how His hand moves to turn us gently yet boldly away. Mud and debris are nothing compared to what most see is escalating and mounting, yet seems we continue to widdle-down our God-given conscience by “accepting” in our hearts, a man-made demonic standard designed specifically to move in war-fare against the Word of God. Christian and non-Christian alike.

  2. I thought it was interesting that the eclipse (and the rare event of it being on winter solstice) happened so close to the Fast of Tevet, especially since one of the next possible events we’re looking for is the armies surrounding Jerusalem.

The 10th of Tevet is a fast marking when the king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, began the siege of Jerusalem. (That has a ring to it as well.) The site goes on to say that it also “was the beginning of the whole chain of calamities which finally ended with the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash.” (Hmm…)

    It went on to say:

“The essential significance of the fast of the Tenth of Tevet, as well as that of the other fast days, is not primarily the grief and mourning which they evoke. Their aim is rather to awaken the hearts towards repentance; to recall to us, both the evil deeds of our fathers, and our own evil deeds, which cause anguish to befall both them and us and thereby to cause us to ruturn towards the good.”

It sure does raise a few eyebrows! Made me wonder if the armies surrounding Jerusalem is a referral to the Fast of Tevet and not an actual event.

Just trying to imagine all the possibilities…

  3. Well there is one thing I do know about astronomy, not astrology as reading the stars like they control our lives, but……

a few wise men followed a star, to where the child Jesus was and I believe, that they were taught by Daniel in Babylon and Persia, when he was promoted there for his work to the kings

so the things happening in the heavens, yeah I do think that they mean something

as well as all of the other you mentioned, remember that our country is now abandoning Israel as far as I can tell

to me that is the biggest of the USA problems

  4. See Joe Ortiz’s “End Times Passover” blog (Dec. 14). WARNING: Bible prophecy fans may experience a 4-alarm earthquake when reading “Pretrib Rapture & Demons” !
